Freedom Day! Thursday, July 22 was our first day without quarantine. It was thrilling to step outside and see people not in hotel uniform, restaurants, stores, and occasionally, sun. One right turn out of our hotel (heading west) and we’re on Kilburn High Road, a busy street with many grocery stores (Tesco, Sainsburys, Marks & Spencer, Iceland), the equivalent of Dollar Tree (Poundland!), salons, bars, restaurants, cell phone stores, and of course, Starbucks, McDonalds and KFC.
On Saturday, we walked east instead, and turned down another street with a canal in a neighborhood called “Little Venice.” Turns out that people live in houseboats along the canal.
We meandered around the canal area and found ourselves in Paddington Station, where we had lunch aboard a barge whose menu featured cheese. Because, cheese! Once upon a time, Darcie's sister pointed out that even the cheapest, grocery store cheese in Great Britain tastes way better than most cheese in the US.
Back on the Cheese Barge, we sat on the upper deck for a view of the canal, even though it was a cloudy, breezy day. We Minnesotans wore t-shirts and shorts whilst everyone else wore winter gear. We also loved the name of the barge next to us.
All in all it was a nice walk and fun day of exploring.
